Before
starting my actual blog, I would like to point out a few things about myself. I
am an affiliate student studying geography in my 3rd year and
spending 1 term at University College of London. I´m writing this blog for a
module dealing with “Water and Development in Africa”. So, this blog is gonna
be written from a student´s point of view who has never conducted research
projects in this field of study on her own.
Moreover, I´ve
have never been to any African countries and thus information, thoughts and
comments posted in this blog only draw from scientific research and media
presentations that were available to me. I am aware of the fact that these
sources are highly dominated by western perspectives and influenced by
scientific or political interests. Additionally,
being brought up, educated and socialized in Western Europe, I do know that I
myself have a certain positionality that I cannot overcome. And this is not my
intention. I can only grasp the implications of water scarcity and development looking
through my own lens. Hence, the title. I will try to write as reflectively and
considerately as possible, but I am open to any insight from more experienced
bloggers, thinkers or scientists. So, feel free to comment and tell me your
thoughts on my posts!
My weekly
blog will revolve around food and water in Africa. I´ll touch upon a variety of topics
related to water accessibility and food security, such as use of water in
agriculture, effects of climate change and food production and a variety of
approaches of dealing with water shortages.
To kick
things off, my next post later this week will be looking into the reasons for “Africa`s
water crisis” and how this is connected to food security.
So stay tuned!
Thanks for the personal start and awareness of potential biases! Look forward to reading subsequent posts!
